tools I use
the stuff I actually use to make things.
- neocities -- where this site lives. free static hosting with a community that actually cares about the web.
- godot engine -- free and open source game engine. one of the two I'm considering for my game.
- RPG maker -- the other engine I'm considering. classic tool for story-driven RPGs.
- aseprite -- pixel art editor. if I end up making sprites, this is where they'll come from.
games that inspire me
games that live in my head and shaped how I think about storytelling.
- undertale -- the game that proved you don't need a big studio to make something that changes people. the way it plays with expectations still gets me.
- earthbound / mother -- weird, warm, funny, sad. the tone I'm chasing for my own game, probably forever.
- omori -- proof that a game about difficult feelings can still be beautiful and tender. the art direction alone is incredible.
resources / references
things I keep coming back to when I'm learning or looking something up.
- the spriters resource -- massive archive of game sprites. great for studying how pixel art works in practice.
- MDN web docs -- the only web reference I trust. if I'm confused about CSS or JS, this is where I go first.
- godot docs -- official godot documentation. well-written and actually helpful.
- lospec -- pixel art palettes, tutorials, and tools. really good for finding color palettes that work.
this list will grow. I'm always finding new things.
